Autonomous Schools were established in 1994 to provide pupils with quality education within the framework of a non-independent status but with greater autonomy devolved to the schools. Autonomous Schools give parents more options in the choice of quality schools for their children.
Autonomous Schools are given additional funding to enable them to develop a wider and better range of programmes to stretch the capability of their pupils. The additional flexibility and funding given to Autonomous Schools have enabled these schools to offer their pupils a much-enhanced teaching and learning environment. Apart from additional and improved facilities, pupils also benefit from a more innovative curriculum as well as a more varied and wider range of enrichment programmes. Autonomous Schools have been able to provide a well-rounded quality education that stretches each pupil to his fullest potential.
The Special Assistance Plan (SAP) Schools are government, government-aided or Independent Schools. These schools were well-established Chinese-medium schools in the past. They offer the Special Course to the top 10% PSLE pupils. This is to enable the pupils to be effectively bilingual in both English and Chinese and also inculcate in them traditional values in a Chinese school environment.
SAP schools have the flexibility to allow pupils who do not meet the criteria of either A* in Chinese or Merit in Higher Chinese, to offer Higher Chinese. This is if they are assessed to have exceptional ability in Chinese and are able to do Higher Chinese without affecting their performance in other subjects.
While the GCE ‘O’ Levels serve as a valuable intermediate benchmark for the majority of our pupils, those who are clearly university-bound can benefit from spending the last four years of their upper secondary/ JC education from Secondary Three to JC Two engaging in broader learning experiences. The Integrated Programmes (IP) will provide an integrated upper secondary and JC education where secondary school pupils can proceed to JC without taking the GCE ‘O’ Level Examinations. Schools offering IP will optimise the time freed up from preparing for the GCE ‘O’ Levels to stretch pupils and provide greater breadth in the academic and non-academic curriculum. However, these schools will continue to have school-based assessments to measure pupils’ progress.
IP is offered at the following secondary schools leading to their respective pre-university qualifications. In addition to S1, schools offering IP may take in students at other entry points, e.g. Secondary Three.
